{"id":11483,"date":"2012-09-27T23:59:48","date_gmt":"2012-09-27T23:59:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/?p=11483"},"modified":"2012-10-02T22:46:44","modified_gmt":"2012-10-02T22:46:44","slug":"thunderstorms-producing-flooding-in-puerto-rico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/11483","title":{"rendered":"Thunderstorms producing heavy rain and flooding in Puerto Rico"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"width: 489px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"thumbnail\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/09\/120927_g14_vis_pr_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"GOES-14 0.63 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel images (click to play animation)\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/09\/120927_G14_VIS_PR_17.GIF\" alt=\"GOES-14 0.63 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel images (click to play animation)\" width=\"479\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-14 0.63 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel images (click to play animation)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Deep moisture and an unstable atmosphere were in place across the island of Puerto Rico on <strong><a title=\"27 September 2012 surface analysis\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/09\/120927_18z_surface_analysis.gif\">27 September 2012<\/a><\/strong>, creating an environment favorable for the development of strong thunderstorms during the afternoon hours (in response to sea breeze convergence and local terrain effects). 1-km resolution GOES-14 0.63 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel images <em><strong>(above; click image to play animation)<\/strong><\/em> and 4-km resolution GOES-14 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel images <em><strong>(below; click image to play animation)<\/strong><\/em> showed the development of large thunderstorms which produced very heavy rainfall <em>(as much as 3-4 inches within a 1-2 hour period)<\/em> which caused flooding problems.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the fact that the the radar at <strong><a title=\"NWS San Juan, Puerto Rico\" href=\"http:\/\/www.srh.noaa.gov\/sju\/\">San Juan, Puerto Rico<\/a><\/strong> had suffered an outage, the National Weather Service forecast Office in <strong><a title=\"NWS Miami, Florida\" href=\"http:\/\/www.srh.noaa.gov\/mfl\/\">Miami, Florida<\/a><\/strong> was called upon to perform back-up duties during the outage (which included the issuance of <strong><a title=\"Area Forecast Discussions\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/09\/120927_afd_sju.text\">Area Forecast Discussions<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a title=\"Flood Advisories\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/09\/120927_fls_sju.text\">Flood Advisories<\/a><\/strong>). To obtain more frequent satellite images during the radar outage, Miami also called for GOES-14 to be placed into Rapid Scan Operations (RSO) &#8212; but unfortunately the default <strong><a title=\"default CONUS RSO scan sector coverage\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/09\/120927_G14_RSO_SECTOR.GIF\">CONUS RSO scan sector<\/a><\/strong> was used, which did not extend far enough eastward to cover Puerto Rico. Just 3 days earlier, GOES-14 had been activated to replace GOES-13 as the operational GOES-East satellite (since GOES-13 instrument problems caused it to go into <strong><a title=\"GOES-13 outage\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/11421\">standby mode on 23 September<\/a><\/strong>)<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"thumbnail\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/09\/120927_g14_ir_pr_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"GOES-14 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel images (click to play animation)\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/09\/120927_G14_IR_PR_17.GIF\" alt=\"GOES-14 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel images (click to play animation)\" width=\"480\" height=\"402\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-14 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel images (click to play animation)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A closer view using 374-meter resolution Suomi NPP VIIRS 0.65 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel and 11.45 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel images <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> showed the strongest thunderstorm located over the southwestern portion of the island at 17:27 UTC.
