A comparison of GOES-11 water vapor channel data with POES (AMSU) and SSM\/I Total Precipitable Water (TPW) products <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> revealed that TPW values were as high as 50-60 mm <em>(2.0-2.4 inches)<\/em> within this moisture plume. The <a title=\"MIMIC TPW product\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/10\/081003_mimic_tpw_anim.gif\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>MIMIC TPW product<\/strong><\/a> suggested that this moisture plume originated over the western Pacific Ocean, southeast of Japan.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 489px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/10\/081003_pw_wv_anim.gif\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"AWIPS images of POES TPW products and GOES water vapor channel\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/10\/081003_pw_wv_anim.gif\" alt=\"AWIPS images of POES TPW products and GOES water vapor channel\" width=\"479\" height=\"458\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">AWIPS images of POES TPW products and GOES water vapor channel<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This moisture plume was associated with a strong polar jet stream, as seen by an overlay of hourly MADIS atmospheric motion vectors on GOES water vapor channel imagery <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/10\/081003_winds_anim.gif\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"GOES water vapor images + MADIS winds\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/10\/081003_winds_anim.gif\" alt=\"GOES water vapor images + MADIS winds\" width=\"480\" height=\"459\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES water vapor images + MADIS winds<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The 18 UTC GFS model fields were forecasting maximum winds in the core of the jet to reach 170 knots <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> &#8212; there were a few <a title=\"MADIS\" href=\"http:\/\/madis.noaa.gov\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>MADIS<\/strong><\/a> wind vectors with speeds of 177-181 knots around that time <em>(and a MADIS wind vector with a speed of <strong>191 knots<\/strong> was seen at 21 UTC)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/10\/081003_winds.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"GFS winds + MADIS winds\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/10\/081003_winds.jpg\" alt=\"GFS winds + MADIS winds\" width=\"480\" height=\"457\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GFS winds + MADIS winds<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AWIPS images of geostationary satellite water vapor channel data (above) showed a long moisture plume moving across the Pacific Ocean toward the west coast of the US on 02-03 October 2008.
