Note that some of the low-altitude smoke was being channeled southward through valleys by strong northerly winds. The surface visibility at Salmon, Idaho <em>(surface identifier KSMN)<\/em> was reduced to 2 miles due to smoke, and at Dillon, Montana <em>(station identifier KDLN)<\/em> the surface visibility dropped to 1.25 miles.<\/p>\n<p>The GOES-13 satellite had been placed into Rapid Scan Operations (RSO) mode, providing images as frequently as every 5-10 minutes (as opposed to the standard 15-minute image interval).<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/08\/120824_modis_truecolor_ID_fires.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"MODIS true color image (viewed using Google Earth)\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/08\/120824_modis_truecolor_ID_fires.jpg\" title=\"MODIS true color image (viewed using Google Earth)\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS true color image (viewed using Google Earth)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A 250-meter resolution Aqua MODIS true color image from the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/ge.ssec.wisc.edu\/modis-today\/index.php?satellite=a1&#038;product=true_color&#038;date=2012_08_24_237\" title=\"SSEC MODIS Today site\">SSEC MODIS Today<\/a><\/strong> site <strong><em>(above; viewed using Google Earth)<\/em><\/strong> showed a detailed view of the smoke plumes at 20:13 UTC.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/08\/120825_suomi_npp_viirs_swir_dnb_ID_fires_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Suomi NPP VIIRS 3.74 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR + 0.8 \u00c2\u00b5m Day\/Night Band images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/08\/120825_suomi_npp_viirs_swir_dnb_ID_fires_anim.gif\" title=\"Suomi NPP VIIRS 3.74 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR + 0.8 \u00c2\u00b5m Day\/Night Band images\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Suomi NPP VIIRS 3.74 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR + 0.8 \u00c2\u00b5m Day\/Night Band images<\/p><\/div>\n<p>During the following night-time hours, a comparison of AWIPS images of Suomi NPP VIIRS 3.74 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR and 0.8 \u00c2\u00b5m Day\/Night Band (DNB) data <strong><em>(above)<\/em><\/strong> demonstrated how the DNB imagery can detect the glow of the actively-burning fires <em>(co-located with the black to yellow to red color enhanced &#8220;hot spots&#8221; on the shortwave IR image)<\/em> in addition to the city lights across the region.
