The coldest IR brightness temperatures of around -27\u00c2\u00ba C or -17\u00c2\u00ba F <em>(darker blue colors)<\/em> corresponded to the higher elevations of the <a title=\"Brooks Range (Wikipedia)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brooks_Range\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Brooks Range<\/strong><\/a> which runs from west to east across northern Alaska. The coldest minimum temperature reported in Alaska that morning was -13\u00c2\u00ba C (+9\u00c2\u00ba F) at Anatuvuk Pass <em>(station identifier PAKP, which had a temperature of +16\u00c2\u00ba F at 16 UTC),<\/em> but the coldest brightness temperatures on the IR image were located well to the west of that station. Two days earlier, Alaska reported their first temperature colder than -18\u00c2\u00ba C\u00c2\u00a0 (0\u00c2\u00ba F)\u00c2\u00a0 this season: both Chalkyitsik and Denali National Park registered a low temperature of <strong>-1\u00c2\u00ba F<\/strong> on the morning of 28 September.<\/p>\n<p>A comparison of MODIS true color images and topography using the <a title=\"Swath Viewer\" href=\"http:\/\/sv.gina.alaska.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Swath Viewer<\/strong><\/a> from the <a title=\"GINA\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gina.alaska.edu\/index.xml\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Geographic Information Network of Alaska<\/strong><\/a> <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> indicated that there was a good deal of snow cover over parts of the higher terrain in northern Alaska, especially across the northern slopes of the Brooks Range<em> (due to a recent period of upslope flow moving inland from the Arctic Ocean, which dropeed several inches of new snow)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 489px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/09\/080930_modis_anim.gif\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"MODIS true color images + topography\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/09\/080930_modis_anim.gif\" alt=\"MODIS true color images + topography\" width=\"479\" height=\"344\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS true color images + topography<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A NOAA-16 AVHRR 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR image (above) showed cold brightness temperatures of -10\u00c2\u00ba to -20\u00c2\u00ba C (violet colors) across much of northwestern Alaska on 30 September 2008.
