Comparison with the corresponding 11.45 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel image and the 11.45-3.74 \u00c2\u00b5m &#8220;fog\/stratus product&#8221; confirmed that the brighter DNB features <em>(the wide <em>west-to-east oriented<\/em> band that stretched across Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario, as well as the separate more complex feature over northern Manitoba)<\/em> were indeed signatures of the aurora, and not high-level or low-level cloud features.<\/p>\n<p>The Auroral Oval map from the <a title=\"NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center\" href=\"http:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/index.html\"><strong>Space Weather Prediction Center<\/strong><\/a>\u00c2\u00a0 <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> showed that the southern edge of the auroral oval extended far southward across Canada at that time.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/08\/2012_08_09_0550z_auroral_oval_map.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Space Weather Prediction Center auroral oval map\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/08\/2012_08_09_0550z_auroral_oval_map.gif\" alt=\"Space Weather Prediction Center auroral oval map\" width=\"450\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Space Weather Prediction Center auroral oval map<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A comparison of AWIPS images of the Suomi NPP VIIRS 0.7 \u00c2\u00b5m Day\/Night Band (DNB), the 11.45 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel, and the 11.45-3.74 \u00c2\u00b5m &#8220;fog\/stratus product&#8221; (above) showed well-defined signatures of the aurora borealis (or &#8220;Northern Lights&#8221;) across central Canada on 09 August 2012.
