The enhanced infrared image above shows a region of active convection (as signified by the overshooting tops designated by yellow circles) near the center of the system. (Current imagery of overshooting tops can be found <a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes_r\/proving-ground\/nhc\/ot\/\">here<\/a>). This convection is aided by abundant moisture as shown in the animation of Total Precipitable Water (TPW), below, taken from the <a href=\"http:\/\/tropic.ssec.wisc.edu\/real-time\/mimic-tpw\/natl\/main.html\">MIMIC TPW<\/a> website.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/08\/MIMICTPW_72hrs_1Aug2012.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Morphed Total Precipitable Water over the north Atlantic Basin\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/08\/MIMICTPW_72hrs_1Aug2012.gif\" alt=\"Morphed Total Precipitable Water over the north Atlantic Basin\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Morphed Total Precipitable Water over the north Atlantic Basin<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Diagnostics from the <a href=\"http:\/\/tropic.ssec.wisc.edu\/\">CIMSS Tropical Weather Website<\/a> (below) suggest that an inhibiting factor to rapid strengthening may be wind shear, as analyses show the storm near a region of significant westerly shear. Should the system become a tropical storm, it will take the name Ernesto. GOES-13 0.63 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel images<em><strong> (below; click image to play animation)<\/strong><\/em> showed that while Ernesto was producing a few convective bursts near its center <a title=\"GOES-13 IR images with overlay of tropical overshooting tops product\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/08\/120802_g13_ir_tot_ernesto_anim.gif\"><strong>(IR image animation with tropical overshooting tops product)<\/strong><\/a>, it was also exhibiting a number of well-defined surface outflow arc clouds along the northern and western periphery of the circulation.
