GOES-12 water vapor brightness temperatures were as warm as 268\u00c2\u00ba K (-5.15\u00c2\u00ba C) at 16:45 and 17:02 UTC &#8212; and the rapid trend of warming\/drying suggested that strong subsidence was occurring in that region.<\/p>\n<p>A comparison of the 4-km resolution GOES-12 and the 1-km resolution MODIS water vapor channel data <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> yielded similar brightness temperature values within the core of the warm\/dry region <em>(-5.1\u00c2\u00ba C on MODIS, -7.5\u00c2\u00ba C on GOES-12)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/09\/080928_g12_modis_wv_anim.gif\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"GOES-12 6.5 \u00c2\u00b5m and MODIS 6.7 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/09\/080928_g12_modis_wv_anim.gif\" alt=\"GOES-12 6.5 \u00c2\u00b5m and MODIS 6.7 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor images\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-12 6.5 \u00c2\u00b5m and MODIS 6.7 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor images<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Curiously, the GOES-12 sounder total column ozone product <em><strong>(<a title=\"GOES-12 sounder total column ozone product\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/09\/080928_ozone_anim.gif\" target=\"_blank\">animation<\/a>)<\/strong><\/em> did <em>not<\/em> exhibit a high ozone feature co-located with the warm\/dry pocket seen on the water vapor imagery <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> &#8212; if this dry air were due to a stratospheric intrusion or a tropopause fold, ozone values would normally increase to the 350-400 Dobson Unit range <em>(green to red colors)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/09\/080928_wv_ozone_anim.gif\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"AWIPS images of GOES-12 water vapor and total column ozone\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/09\/080928_wv_ozone_anim.gif\" alt=\"AWIPS images of GOES-12 water vapor and total column ozone\" width=\"480\" height=\"459\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">AWIPS images of GOES-12 water vapor and total column ozone<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GOES-12 6.5 micrometer &#8220;water vapor channel&#8221; imagery (above) revealed a pronounced warming\/drying signature (darker orange colors) as Hurricane Kyle was beginning the transition to an extratropical system on 28 September 2008.
