Evans tornado\">photographed<\/a><\/strong> near Mt. Evans in north-central Colorado around 2:51 PM local time or 20:51 UTC (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/07\/120728_kbou_lsr.text\" title=\"Local Storm Report\">Local Storm Report<\/a><\/strong>) on <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20120728.html\" title=\"28 July 2012 daily weather map\">28 July 2012<\/a><\/strong>. A comparison of McIDAS images of 4-km resolution GOES-15 (GOES-West) and GOES-13 (GOES-East) 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel data <strong><em>(above)<\/em><\/strong> showed that the thunderstorm which produced the tornado developed fairly rapidly just to the east of Copper Mountain <em>(station identifier KCCU),<\/em> but was relatively small in size and did not exhibit particularly cold cloud top IR brightness temperatures <em>(-40\u00c2\u00ba C at 20:45 UTC, and -52\u00c2\u00ba C at 21:15 UTC)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>AWIPS images of 1-km resolution MODIS 0.6 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel and 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel data at 20:28 UTC <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> showed that the storm was beginnng to produce a few negative cloud-to-ground lightning strikes, with a minimum IR brightness temperature around -50\u00c2\u00ba C at that time.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/07\/120728_modis_vis_ir_CO_tornado_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"MODIS 0.65 \u00c2\u00b5m visible and 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel images (with cloud-to-ground lightning strikes)\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/07\/120728_modis_vis_ir_CO_tornado_anim.gif\" title=\"MODIS 0.65 \u00c2\u00b5m visible and 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel images (with cloud-to-ground lightning strikes)\" width=\"480\" height=\"459\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS 0.65 \u00c2\u00b5m visible and 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel images (with cloud-to-ground lightning strikes)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The CIMSS <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/snaap\/convinit\/quicklooks\/\" title=\"GOES Convective Storm Monitoring and Nowcasting Products\">Cloud Top Cooling Rate<\/a><\/strong> product <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> did flag the storm at 20:32 UTC as it was beginning to develop in north-central Colorado.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/07\/120728_g13_cloud_top_cooling_rate_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"GOES-13 instantaneous Cloud Top Cooling Rate product\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/07\/120728_g13_cloud_top_cooling_rate_anim.gif\" title=\"GOES-13 instantaneous Cloud Top Cooling Rate product\" width=\"480\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-13 instantaneous Cloud Top Cooling Rate product<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A tornado was observed and photographed near Mt.
