A comparison of AWIPS images of 375-meter resolution <em>(projected onto a 1-km AWIPS grid)<\/em> 3.74 \u00b5m shortwave IR data and the corresponding 0.7 \u00b5m Day\/Night Band data <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> revealed the bright night-time illumination of widespread drilling activity across the <a title=\"Eagle Ford shale formation\" href=\"http:\/\/www.eaglefordshale.com\/\"><strong>Eagle Ford<\/strong><\/a> oil shale formation in southeastern Texas at 08:49 UTC <em>(3:49 AM local time)<\/em> on <a title=\"25 June 2012 daily weather map\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20120625.html\"><strong>25 June 2012<\/strong><\/a>. On the shortwave IR image, a number of small &#8220;hot spots&#8221; <em>(pixels with a darker red color enhancement)<\/em> could be seen, which were associated with natural gas flares at some of the larger drilling rig sites.<\/p>\n<p>A similar signature of night-time drilling activity had been previously noted on VIIRS Day\/Night Band imagery across the <a title=\"Bakken oil shale formation\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bakkenshale.com\/\"><strong>Bakken<\/strong><\/a> oil shale formation in western North Dakota &#8212; and a comparison with the color-enhanced shortwave IR image <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> at 08:30 UTC <em>(2:30 or 3:30 AM local time, depending on the exact location)<\/em> on <strong>26 June 2012<\/strong> again showed a number of natural gas flare &#8220;hot spots&#8221; at some of the larger illuminated drilling rig sites.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 652px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/06\/120626_suomi_npp_viirs_swir_dnb_ND_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" title=\"Suomi NPP VIIRS 3.74 \u00b5m shortwave IR and 0.7 \u00b5m Day\/Night Band images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/06\/120626_suomi_npp_viirs_swir_dnb_ND_anim.gif\" alt=\"Suomi NPP VIIRS 3.74 \u00b5m shortwave IR and 0.7 \u00b5m Day\/Night Band images\" width=\"642\" height=\"503\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Suomi NPP VIIRS 3.74 \u00b5m shortwave IR and 0.7\u00b5m Day\/Night Band images<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Note that there is some striping seen in the Day\/Night Band (DNB) image over North Dakota &#8212; a view of the entire VIIRS DNB swath <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> shows that North Dakota was located within the &#8220;stray light zone&#8221; of the Suomi NPP satellite orbit, where some sunlight was reachng the DNB detectors.
