There were a number of <a title=\"MODIS IR image with pilot reports of turbulence\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/06\/120614_modis_ir_pirep_jvl.jpg\"><strong>pilot reports of moderate turbulence<\/strong><\/a> seen within this banded area of cirrus outflow.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"thumbnail\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/06\/120614_g13_vis_mcs_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  \" title=\"GOES-13 0.63 \u00c2\u00b5m visible images with pilot reports of turbulence (click image to play animation)\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/06\/Reg_Vis_Sat_20120614_1901.png\" alt=\"GOES-13 0.63 \u00c2\u00b5m visible images with pilot reports of turbulence (click image to play animation)\" width=\"480\" height=\"362\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-13 0.63 \u00c2\u00b5m visible images with pilot reports of turbulence (click image to play animation)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The banding structure within the cirrus outflow region was clearly shown on a 375-meter resolution <em>(re-mapped onto an AWIPS 1 km grid)<\/em> Suomi NPP VIIRS 11.45 \u00c2\u00b5m IR image at 18:35 UTC<em><strong>\u00c2\u00a0 (below)<\/strong><\/em>. A comparison with the corresponding 4-km resolution GOES-13 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR image demonstrated the advantage of higher spatial resolution for depicting such features.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/06\/120614_viirs_g13_ir_mcs_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Suomi NPP VIIRS 11.45 \u00c2\u00b5m IR image + GOES-13 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR image\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/06\/120614_viirs_g13_ir_mcs_anim.gif\" alt=\"Suomi NPP VIIRS 11.45 \u00c2\u00b5m IR image + GOES-13 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR image\" width=\"480\" height=\"436\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Suomi NPP VIIRS 11.45 \u00c2\u00b5m IR image + GOES-13 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR image<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The pronounced anticyclonic motion of the cirrus outflow <em>(also verfied using MADIS 1-hour cloud-tracked winds)<\/em> was creating strong wind shear aloft over much of eastern Iowa, southern Wisconsin, and northern Illinois &#8212; note how different the satellite wind vector directions were from the NAM 500-100 hPa deep-layer wind flow streamlines over that region <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>.
