Strong easterly winds early in the day promoted a long westward fetch of smoke transport toward the Florida Panhandle region, but a change in wind direction along with a reduction in wind speeds allowed the smoke to become more densely concentrated around the burn area later in the day. The smoke was reducing surface visibility and causing air quality problems (see the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/alg.umbc.edu\/usaq\/archives\/004523.html\" title=\"US Air Quality blog\">US Air Quality blog<\/a><\/strong>)  at some locations across northern Florida. <\/p>\n<p>A 250-meter resolution MODIS true-color Red\/Green\/Blue (RGB) image from the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/ge.ssec.wisc.edu\/modis-today\/index.php?satellite=a1&#038;product=true_color&#038;date=2012_04_07_098&#038;overlay_sector=false&#038;overlay_state=true&#038;overlay_coastline=true\" title=\"SSEC MODIS Today site\">SSEC MODIS Today<\/a><\/strong> site <strong><em>(below; viewed using Google Earth)<\/em><\/strong> showed a closer view of the source region of the smoke plume.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/04\/120407_modis_truecolor_google.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"MODIS true-color Red\/Green\/Blue (RGB) image (viewed using Google Earth)\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/04\/120407_modis_truecolor_google.jpg\" title=\"MODIS true-color Red\/Green\/Blue (RGB) image (viewed using Google Earth)\" width=\"480\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS true-color Red\/Green\/Blue (RGB) image (viewed using Google Earth)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Even though the smoke was quite thick over the fire source region, a comparison of AWIPS images of MODIS 0.65 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel and 3.7 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR channel data <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> showed how the fire &#8220;hot spot&#8221; <em>(red to yellow to black color enhancement)<\/em> could still easily be detected with the shortwave IR imagery.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/04\/120407_modis_vis_swir_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"MODIS 0.65 \u00c2\u00b5m visible image + MODIS 3.7 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR image\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/04\/120407_modis_vis_swir_anim.gif\" title=\"MODIS 0.65 \u00c2\u00b5m visible image + MODIS 3.7 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR image\" width=\"480\" height=\"459\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS 0.65 \u00c2\u00b5m visible image + MODIS 3.7 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR image<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A sequence of 1-km resolution MODIS and POES AVHRR 3.7 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR images <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> showed the diurnal change in size of the fire hot spot signature <em>(red to yellow to black color enhancement)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/04\/120407_modis_avhrr_swir_fl_fire_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"MODIS and POES AVHRR 3.7 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/04\/120407_modis_avhrr_swir_fl_fire_anim.gif\" alt=\"MODIS and POES AVHRR 3.7 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR images\" width=\"480\" height=\"459\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS and POES AVHRR 3.7 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR images<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A comparison of 4-km resolution GOES-13 3.9 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR imagery with 1-km resolution MODIS 3.7 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR imagery in the early afternoon hours <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> demonstrated the advantage of higher spatial resolution for more accuately determining the exact location of the County Line fire in far northern Florida, as well as the ability to detect a few of the smaller fires that were burning at that time in other parts of Florida and southern Georgia.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/04\/120407_modis_g13_swir_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"MODIS 3.7 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR + GOES-13 3.9 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/04\/120407_modis_g13_swir_anim.gif\" alt=\"MODIS 3.7 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR + GOES-13 3.9 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR images\" width=\"480\" height=\"459\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS 3.7 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR + GOES-13 3.9 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR images<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Finally, a comparison of 375-meter resolution <strong><a title=\"Suomi NPP\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/media\/spotlight\/npp-suomi.html\">Suomi NPP<\/a><\/strong> VIIRS 3.74 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR and 11.450 \u00c2\u00b5m longwave IR images <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> provided even greater detail about the location and size of the fire.
