These storms produced a number of tornadoes, hail as large as 2.75 inches in diameter, and damaging winds (<strong><a title=\"SPC storm reports\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spc.noaa.gov\/climo\/reports\/120403_rpts.html\">SPC storm reports<\/a><\/strong> | <strong><a title=\"NWS Fort Worth outbreak summary\" href=\"http:\/\/www.srh.noaa.gov\/fwd\/?n=april32012sum\">NWS Fort Worth outbreak summary<\/a><\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>A closer view using a 1-km resolution MODIS 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel image at 17:29 UTC <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> showed much better details regarding the cloud top IR brightness temperature structure of the storms. In particular, note the pronounced cold\/warm <em>(-63\u00c2\u00ba C \/ -52\u00c2\u00ba C, respectively)<\/em> thermal couplet<em><\/em> exhibited by the storm located just east of Cleburne <em>(station identifier KCPT),<\/em> where the first tornado was reported by spotters at 17:35 UTC.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/04\/120403_1729z_modis_ir_ltg_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"MODIS 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel image + Surface reports + Surface frontal analysis + Cloud-to-ground lightning strikes\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/04\/120403_1729z_modis_ir_ltg_anim.gif\" alt=\"MODIS 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel image + Surface reports + Surface frontal analysis + Cloud-to-ground lightning strikes\" width=\"480\" height=\"459\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel image + Surface reports + Surface frontal analysis + Cloud-to-ground lightning strikes<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A comparison of the 1-km resolution MODIS 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel image with the corresponding 4-km resolution GOES-13 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel image <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> demonstrated (1) the advantage of higher spatial resolution for more accurately identifying and quantifying storm top signatures, and (2) the <strong><a title=\"parallax\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/217\">parallax shift<\/a><\/strong> of the storm top features, due to the large viewing angle from the GOES-13 <em>(GOES-East)<\/em> satellite.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/04\/120403_modis_g13_ir_1_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"GOES-13 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel image + MODIS 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel image\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/04\/120403_modis_g13_ir_1_anim.gif\" alt=\"GOES-13 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel image + MODIS 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel image\" width=\"480\" height=\"459\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-13 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel image + MODIS 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel image<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A similar MODIS vs GOES-13 IR image comparison about 90 minutes later <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> again showed how the numerous cold overshooting tops were much more apparent on the 1-km resolution MODIS image.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/04\/120403_modis_g13_ir_2_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"MODIS 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel image + GOES-13 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel image\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/04\/120403_modis_g13_ir_2_anim.gif\" alt=\"MODIS 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel image + GOES-13 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel image\" width=\"480\" height=\"459\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel image + GOES-13 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel image<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Even greater detail could be seen on a 375-meter resolution Suomi NPP VIIRS 11.450 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel image at 19:33 UTC <em><strong>(below),<\/strong><\/em> which showed a number of cold overshooting tops with IR brightness temperature values in the -70 to -79 C range <em>(dark black to white color enhancement)<\/em>.
