The combination of strong southwesterly winds <em>(gusting in the 35-50 mph range)<\/em> and very dry air <em>(relative humidity values around 10%)<\/em> created an environment that was favorable for rapid wildfire growth. A comparison of McIDAS images of GOES-15 <em>(GOES-West)<\/em> and GOES-13 <em>(GOES-East)<\/em> 0.63 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel data <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> showed the development of a large smoke plume with embedded pyrocumulus clouds.<\/p>\n<p>The corresponding series of GOES-15 and GOES-13 3.9 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR images <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> revealed how quickly the fire &#8220;hot spot&#8221; <em>(black to yellow to red color enhancement)<\/em> grew in size.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/03\/120326_g15_g13_ir2_CO_fire_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"GOES-15 + GOES-13 3.9 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/03\/120326_g15_g13_ir2_CO_fire_anim.gif\" alt=\"GOES-15 + GOES-13 3.9 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR images\" width=\"480\" height=\"359\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-15 + GOES-13 3.9 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR images<\/p><\/div>\n<p>An AWIPS comparison of a 1-km resolution POES AVHRR 3.7 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR image with the corresponding 4-km resolution GOES-13 3.9 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR image just after 02 UTC or 8 pm local time\u00c2\u00a0 <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> demonstrated the advantage of higher spatial resolution for more accurately identifying the location and areal coverage of the fire.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/03\/120327_avhrr_goes_swir_CO_fire_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"POES AVHRR 3.7 \u00c2\u00b5m + GOES-13 3.9 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/03\/120327_avhrr_goes_swir_CO_fire_anim.gif\" alt=\"POES AVHRR 3.7 \u00c2\u00b5m + GOES-13 3.9 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR images\" width=\"480\" height=\"453\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">POES AVHRR 3.7 \u00c2\u00b5m + GOES-13 3.9 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR images<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A larger scale HD-format view of GOES-13 0.63 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel images <em><strong>(below; click image to play animation)<\/strong><\/em> revealed other interesting features across the region, such as (1) a large blowing dust plume oriented from southwest to northeast across Colorado, (2) a terrain-induced standing wave cloud over southwestern Colorado, (3) the development of a line of thunderstorms across eastern Wyoming, and (4) another smaller blowing dust plume across eastern Idaho.
