{"id":10032,"date":"2012-03-18T23:59:12","date_gmt":"2012-03-18T23:59:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/?p=10032"},"modified":"2012-03-22T03:31:46","modified_gmt":"2012-03-22T03:31:46","slug":"near-record-march-temperature-in-south-dakota","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/10032","title":{"rendered":"Near-record March temperature in South Dakota"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/03\/120318_modis_vis_lst_SD_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"MODIS 0.65 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel image + MODIS Land Surface Temperature product\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/03\/120318_modis_vis_lst_SD_anim.gif\" title=\"MODIS 0.65 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel image + MODIS Land Surface Temperature product\" width=\"480\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS 0.65 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel image + MODIS Land Surface Temperature product<\/p><\/div>\n<p>On <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20120318.html\" title=\"18 March 2012 daily weather map\">18 March 2012<\/a><\/strong>, the maximum temperature at Winner, South Dakota <em>(station identifier KICR)<\/em> reached <strong>92\u00c2\u00ba F (33\u00c2\u00ba C),<\/strong> which was just shy of the State&#8217;s all-time record high temperature for the month of March <em>(which was 94\u00c2\u00ba F or 34\u00c2\u00ba C, set at Tyndall in 1943)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>An AWIPS image comparison of MODIS 0.65 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel data with the corresponding MODIS Land Surface Temperature (LST) product <strong><em>(above)<\/em><\/strong> showed pockets of very warm LST values in the 95-105\u00c2\u00ba F range <em>(darker red color enhancement)<\/em> across parts of South Dakota at 19:10 UTC <em>(1:10 pm local time)<\/em>. Differences in soil type and vegetaion density can contribute to higher LST values &#8212; and there is no direct 1:1 correspondence between LST values and air temperature values measured in an instrument shelter at a height of 5 feet off the surface. Daily record high temperatures were also set on 18 March at other locations in central and eastern South Dakota: Pierre <em>(88\u00c2\u00ba F),<\/em> Sioux Falls and Aberdeen <em>(85\u00c2\u00ba F),<\/em> Sisseton and Watertown <em>(82\u00c2\u00ba F),<\/em> and Mobridge <em>(81\u00c2\u00ba F)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Land surface temperature values were not available in the immediate vicinity of Winner at the time of the MODIS images, due to patches of thin cirrus cloud over that area &#8212; the cloud mask prevents the calculation of LST products in cloudy areas. These patches of thin cirrus clouds could be seen as colder IR brightness temperatures <em>(yellow to green color enhancement)<\/em> in the MODIS 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel image <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong>.
