The light gray smoke plume and the dark burn scar grew very quickly, which could be seen on GOES-11 <em>(GOES-West),<\/em>\u00c2\u00a0 GOES-15, and GOES-13 <em>(GOES-East)<\/em> visible channel images <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em>. Each of the 3 sets of images is displayed in the native projection of the respective satellite.<\/p>\n<p>The corresponding 3.9 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR images from each satellite <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> showed the large and intense &#8220;hot spot&#8221; <em>(dark black to yellow pixels)<\/em> associated with the Okreek fire. Note there were also a few other smaller fires burning in other parts of central South Dakota during that time period, which also exhibited very intense hot spot signatures.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/10\/111005_g11_g15_g13_ir2_sd_fire_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"GOES-11 + GOES-15 + GOES-13 shortwave IR images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/10\/111005_g11_g15_g13_ir2_sd_fire_anim.gif\" alt=\"GOES-11 + GOES-15 + GOES-13 shortwave IR images\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-11 + GOES-15 + GOES-13 shortwave IR images<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A comparison of 250-meter resolution false-color Red\/Green\/Blue (RGB) images from the <a title=\"SSEC MODIS Today site\" href=\"http:\/\/ge.ssec.wisc.edu\/modis-today\/index.php?satellite=a1&amp;product=false_color&amp;date=2011_10_07_280&amp;overlay_sector=false&amp;overlay_state=true&amp;overlay_coastline=true&amp;sector=USA2&amp;resolution=1000m\"><strong>SSEC MODIS Today<\/strong><\/a> site from before <em>(04 October),<\/em> during <em>(05 October),<\/em> and after <em>(07 October)<\/em> the Okreek fire revealed the development and growth of the 26 mile long burn scar <em>(which appears as the light brown line)<\/em>.
