17 April 2007 - GOES-12 Visible + 3.9 Micrometer IR Channel Images

This animation of GOES-12 visible and 3.9 micrometer shortwave IR imagery shows a dense smoke plume (upper panel) and a large "hot spot" (lower panel) associated with a fire that was burning in southeastern Georgia (south of Waycross, station identifier KAYS) on 17 April 2007. The fire was hot enough to saturate the GOES-12 3.9 micrometer detectors, which caused the brightness temperature value to "roll over" and be displayed as a very cold temperature (white enhancement). In addition, note the the land surface beneath the thick smoke plume exhibited a slightly cooler brightness temperature (lighter gray enhancement), due to a reduction in solar radiation arriving at the surface.
