Cultural Connections to Meteorology

Culture is shaped by weather. The weather and climate of a particular region forces groups to develop unique ways in which to interact with their environment. For example, Inuit people developed their distinctive cultural ways in response to their Arctic locale. As a result, their culture is recognized for its characteristic clothing (skin and fur parkas), seasonal housing (igloos), transportation (kayacks and dog sleds), foodways (high meat and fish, low vegetable intake), art (ivory carvings), games (the Blanket Toss), and mythical beings (such as Sedna who controlled all sea creatures). All these traditional elements of Inuit culture can be linked with their environment and its associated weather and climate.
