Convective Initiation Nowcasting:

Products Included with Configuration

The products available with configuration of the SSEC/CIMSS NearCast file processing are as follows.

Layer precipitable water (900mb-700mb or 700mb-300mb; must choose level of interest from the planes menu for NearCast)Vertical precipitable water difference (difference between mid and low level PW values)

Layer precipitable water (900mb-700mb or 700mb-300mb; must choose level of interest from the planes menu for NearCas)Vertical precipitable water difference (difference between mid and low level PW values)

Theta-e (780mb or 500mb; must choose level of interest from the planes menu for NearCast) Vertical theta-e difference (difference between low and mid level theta-e values)

All the products can be chosen from the Volume Browser via the configured menu options given above

Additional information-

The naming convention of the SSEC/CIMSS NearCast data files is as follows:

For East CONUS: SSEC_AWIPS_NRCAST_10KM_ECON__F_.GRIB2

For West CONUS: SSEC_AWIPS_NRCAST_10KM_WCON__F_.GRIB2

For file date and time information, Y denotes year, M denotes numbered month, D denotes day of month, C denotes cycle hour, H denotes forecast hour of model cycle, and N denotes forecast minute of model cycle. These files can be accessed from the CIMSS EXP LDM feed via CIMSS or NWS Regional Headquarters.

Required AWIPS II Configurations

These files are subject to change as the software evolves.

LDAD/Processing Configurations

Perform the following actions to configure your Local Data Acquisition and Dissemination (LDAD) server.

In /data/fxa/LDAD/data as user ldad on server px2:

In /awips/ldad/bin as ldad on px2:

EDEX Configuration (processing servers)

In /awips2/edex/data/utility/edex_static/site/LLL/ as user awips on dx3 or dx4, where LLL is the WFO identifier:

  1. For east CONUS, Append to grib /awips2/edex/data/utility/edex_static/site/LLL/distribution/grib.xml
  2. For west CONUS, Append to grib /awips2/edex/data/utility/edex_static/site/LLL/distribution/grib.xml
  3. Add custom NearCast.cmap to /awips2/edex/data/utility/common_static/site/LLL/colormaps/
  4. Add costum NearCastPW.xml to /awips2/edex/data/utility/common_static/site/LLL/derivedParameters/
  5. Add costum NearCastPWDiff.xml to /awips2/edex/data/utility/common_static/site/LLL/derivedParameters/
  6. Add costum NearCastTE.xml to /awips2/edex/data/utility/common_static/site/LLL/derivedParameters/
  7. Add costum NearCastTEDiff.xml to /awips2/edex/data/utility/common_static/site/LLL/derivedParameters/
  8. For east CONUS,add costum grid to /awips2/edex/data/utility/edex_static/site/LLL/grib/grids/cimssnce-grid.xml
  9. For wast CONUS,add costum grid to /awips2/edex/data/utility/edex_static/site/LLL/grib/grids/cimssncw-grid.xml
  10. For east CONUS,add costum nre to /awips2/edex/data/utility/edex_static/site/LLL/grib/models/cimssnre.xml
  11. For west CONUS,add costum nrw to /awips2/edex/data/utility/edex_static/site/LLL/grib/models/cimssnrw.xml
  12. For east CONUS, Append to purgerules to /awips2/edex/data/utility/common_static/site/LLL/purge/gridPurgeRules.xml
  13. For west CONUS, Append to purgerules to /awips2/edex/data/utility/common_static/site/LLL/purge/gridPurgeRules.xml
  14. Append to stylerules to /awips2/edex/data/utility/common_static/site/LLL/styleRules/gridImageryStyleRules.xml

Please make sure to use commands chown and chmod on the installed/altered files to make the ownership and permissions match those of the other AWIPS II files.

Once these files are in place, you wll need to restart your EDEX.

CAVE Configuration (visualization servers)

In /awips2/edex/data/utility/cave_static/site/LLL/ as user awips on dx3 or dx4, where LLL is the WFO identifier:

  1. Append to plan menu /awips2/edex/data/utility/cave_static/site/LLL/menus/xml/planesMenusPlanView.xml
  2. Append to field display /awips2/edex/data/utility/cave_static/site/LLL/volumebrowser/FieldDisplayTypes.xml
  3. Append to level mapping /awips2/edex/data/utility/cave_static/site/LLL/volumebrowser/LevelMappingFile.xml
  4. For east CONUS,append to cave-vbsource /awips2/edex/data/utility/cave_static/site/LLL/volumebrowser/VbSources.xml
  5. For west CONUS,append to cave-vbsource /awips2/edex/data/utility/cave_static/site/LLL/volumebrowser/VbSources.xml

Please make sure to use commands chown and chmod on the installed/altered files to make the ownership and permissions match those of the other AWIPS II files. Once these items are in place, you will have to restart your CAVE session, if it's already running.
