Extensive agricultural burning across the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico and other regions of Central America was producing a large smoke pall across portions of the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. Numerous black "hot spots" are evident on the shortwave infrared image, most of which persisted during the entire day on 25 April 1997. Southerly winds across that region where acting to transport large amounts of smoke northward.
