American Airlines Flight 1420 crashed while making a landing at Little Rock National Airport (Adams Field) at 04:50 UTC on 02 June 1999 (11:50 PM CDT 01 June 1999). GOES-8 10.7 micrometer InfraRed (IR) imagery showed an intense cluster of convection moving southeastward across Arkansas during that time. Cloud top temperatures were as cold as -60 to -70 C (red to black enhancement) within this convective system, indicating that some tops had penetrated the tropopause (-68.1 C at 110 hPa on the 00 UTC Little Rock rawinsonde).
