This loop of GOES-9 10.7um longwave IR imagery shows only subtle hints of some of the larger ship condensation trails ("ship tracks") off the California coast on 15 July 1998. These features were only apparent after applying a contrast stretch to enhance the cooler offshore cloud features -- this enhancement makes the land surface over California and Nevada appear very warm (black).
