Pine Lake, Alberta Tornado

Java applet developed by Tom Whittaker, CIMSS / SSEC

This loop of GOES-8 10.7 micrometer InfraRed (IR) imagery shows the development of convection across southern Alberta on 14 July 2000. The Pine Lake (east of Red Deer, station identifier CYQF) tornado occured from 00:45 to 01:15 UTC on 15 July (6:45 to 7:15 PM MDT on 14 July). Note that the appearance of the "Enhanced-V" cloud top signature (seen on the GOES-10 IR imagery) is hardly recognizable on GOES-8, due to the extreme viewing angle from the GOES-8 satellite.
