CSPP Geo LightningCast Version 1.0 Beta2 Release

6 Mar 2025

The CSPP Geo LightningCast Version 1.0 Beta 2 software predicts the probability of a Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) observation of lightning occurring in the next hour within a region of interest. The Version 1.0 Beta 2 release includes the following changes compared to the Version 1.0 Beta 1 release:

  • Adds support for GOES-19 ABI Level 1B
  • Adds true color and true color/IR cloud phase composite image types
  • Updated core science code with improved tensorflow model
  • Bug fixes and various minor improvements

Basic instructions, usage examples and documentation can be found in the beta Software Users' Guide on the CSPP Geo Downloads page. The software package is self-contained; installation of additional third-party software is not required.

Note that beta software has not been as thoroughly tested as a typical production release. Additionally there may be changes affecting functionality and interfaces before the Version 1 production release.

System Requirements:

This software is built for Rocky 8 or 9 Linux (or other compatible 64-bit Linux distribution), and has been tested on both Intel and AMD CPUs.

Hardware requirements will vary significantly depending on the size and cadence of images being processed. The table below describes some near real-time processing scenarios that were tested, and the hardware that was successfully used for each.

Continuous Processing Scenario Tested Inputs Tested Hardware
A single small image domain or subset Any one of:
  • Meso domain (GOES-East or GOES-West)
  • CONUS domain (GOES-East or GOES-West)
  • Any AWIPS Full Disk predefined cut-out (GOES-East, GOES-West or Himawari)
  • 3.8 GHz, 20-core, 64 GB RAM
All image domains and subsets for GOES-East, GOES-West and Himawari All of the above running in parallel (all satellites, sectors and AWIPS cut-outs 3.20 GHz, 32-core, 256 GB RAM
