CSPP Geo LightningCast Version 1.0 Beta1 Release

1 Oct 2024

This is the initial Version 1.0 Beta release and includes the following features:

  • Predicts the probability of a Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) observation of lightning occurring in the next hour within a region of interest
  • Supported inputs: GOES-16, -17 or -18 ABI Level 1B; Himawari-8 or -9 AHI HSD files
  • Creates a variety of output files including GeoJSON, GR placefiles, NetCDFs and imagery with lightning probability contours overlaid
  • Optional over-plotting of GLM Flash Extent Density (as generated by the CSPP Geo Gridded GLM package)
  • User-definable regions of interest
  • Optional parallax correction
  • Optional AWIPS-compatible output

Basic instructions, usage examples and documentation can be found in the beta Software Users' Guide on the CSPP Geo Downloads page. The software package is self-contained; installation of additional third-party software is not required.

Note that beta software has not been as thoroughly tested as a typical production release. Additionally there may be changes affecting functionality and interfaces before the Version 1 production release.

System Requirements:

This software has been tested on both Intel and AMD CPUs, and on Rocky 8 and 9 Linux (or other compatible 64-bit Linux distribution).

Hardware requirements will vary significantly depending on the size and cadence of images being processed. The table below describes some near real-time processing scenarios that were tested, and the hardware that was successfully used for each.

Continuous Processing Scenario Tested Inputs Tested Hardware
A single small image domain or subset GOES-16 Meso, GOES-16 CONUS or Himawari-9 default cut-out (Guam) 3.8 GHz, 20-core, 64 GB RAM
A single large image domain or subset GOES-16 Full Disk AWIPS cut-out 2.6 GHz, 20-core, 128 GB RAM
All sectors for GOES-16, GOES-18 and Himawari-9 Running in parallel:
  • GOES-16: AWIPS Full Disk (default cut-out), CONUS, and Meso
  • GOES-18: AWIPS Full Disk (both cut-outs), CONUS, and Meso
  • Himwawari-9: AWIPS Full Disk (default cut-out)
  • 3.20 GHz, 32-core, 256 GB RAM
