NESDIS History
- 1959, Explorer-7
- 1960, TIROS-1
- 1960, National Environmental Satellite Service (NESS) Founded
- 1961, Congressional madate for operational weather satellites
- 1965, the Environmental Data Service (EDS) was established with the advent of ESSA (Environmental Science Services Administration).
- 1966, NASA's ATS-1 (with Dr. Suomi's Spin Scan Cloud Camera)
- 1970 (October 3), NOAA is formed (in Commerce, not Interior).
- 1978, EDS was renamed the Environmental Data and Information Service (EDIS)
- 1980 (August), the NESS was removed from the Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Services and became a principal agency line organization in NOAA.
- 1982, NESDIS was formed with the merger of NESS (National Earth Satellite Service) and the Environmental Data Service.
- As of August 27, 2023; ASPB (and CORP) dissolved and merged with other STAR divisions/branches. The federal employees remained in Madison, WI.
