Homework: Due Tuesday, October 7

Materials:

Beer or soda, a glass to pour it into and some salt.

Assignment:

The purpose of this homework is to relate the formation of bubbles in beer or soda (pop) to the formation of cloud droplets. Beer, which can certainly be non-alcoholic, tends to form better bubbles than soda.

  • First thing to do is open the cold beer or soda (long neck bottles are best for this part of the homework). Immediately after you open the bottle look inside and tell me what you observed and why.

  • Now pour the beer or soda into the glass. Where do the bubbles tend to form and why? What happens to the bubbles after they form?

  • Pour some salt into the glass (sand or sugar can be used if you can't find salt). What happens when you pour the salt in and why does this happen?
