My old physics book (Modern Physics by Tipler) states that wv_max*T = 2.898 x 10^(-3) m K.  So if the maximum wavelengths are expressed in micrometers and the temperature in Kelvin, the constant of proportionality is 2898 micrometers K, as stated in class.
