WVSS-II Validation Louisville (WVL) UW-CIMSS AERIBago ----------------------- Date: 18 June 2005 CST (Friday) 0000 - 1200 UTC Location: Kentucky Air National Guard at SDF Airport Operators: M. Richards and T. Wagner http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/wvssii/ Weather Conditions: Cool, yet winder than in recent days. Thin stratocumulus deck became full stratus deck as night went on. Instrument Status: * AERIBago - Circuit breaker was tripped at power source, causing air conditioning units in the AERIbago to temporarily stop working. The problem was soon fixed. * Surface station - working and archiving * Ceilometer - working and archiving * GPS system - Upon closer inspection, the GPS unit has not been archiving. This will be rectified by the time the next round of balloon launches begins. * AERI - archiving properly. * Radiosonde system is working and archiving 2 launches were completed today 0240 UTC Launch normal, data good 0745 UTC Due to a changed flight schedule by UPS for Friday nights/Saturday mornings, the operators in association with Randy Baker of UPS meteorology, decided to delay the standard 0645 UTC launch by one hour to better line up with UPS operations. Due to a lack of WVSS-equipped aircraft, the final launch was never attempted. Science Discussion: Image 1: 0245 UTC UW-CIMSS radiosonde and closest WVSS-II instrumentation (FSL Tail 286). Nicely captures the thin vertical dry layer at 720 mb. Cheers, Wayne
