WVSS-II Validation Louisville (WVL) UW-CIMSS AERIBago ----------------------- Date: 14 June 2005 CST (Monday) 0000 - 1200 UTC Location: Kentucky Air National Guard at SDF Airport Operators: W. Feltz and E. Olson http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/wvssii/ Weather Conditions: Very warm and humid. Temperatures during setup in upper 80 F with dewpoints in lower 70's F. Partly cloudy to clear overnight with temperatures falling to 80 F by 12 UTC, towering cumulus evident during 0930 UTC launch at sunrise Instrument Status: * AERIBago - Intermittent power issues the first day, stable during nighttime hours, power failure from 14 - 22 UTC 20050614 so no data during day (but not critical to success of nighttime UPS comparisons), we are working with base electrician to resolve power stability issue * Surface station was up and running by 2200 UTC on 13 June. New anemometer installation working nominally, p, t, q and radiosonde surface measurements were very close to one another * Ceilometer working and archiving at approximately 300 UTC * GPS system working and archiving at approximately 300 UTC * AERI working and archiving at 00 UTC * Radiosonde system is working and archiving 3 launches were completed today 0240 UTC Launch normal, data good 0645 UTC Launch normal, data good 0930 UTC Launch normal, good data, 0915 launch time moved to accommodate UPS aircraft departures data uploaded to FSL ACARS Viewer Science/Miscellaneous: A very nice comparison between ascending UPS aircraft 919 UTC (FSL #287, image 1) and 923 UTC (FSL #285, image 2) and UW-CIMSS radiosonde 0930 UTC attached. Looks like a problem with water vapor sensor on UPS aircraft 916 UTC ascent (FSL #286, image 3), I need to check against reject list. Summary of all profiles on slide 4. Scattered towering cumulus visible during sunrise at this launch explaining variability in saturation at ~800 mb. Preliminary number of WVSS-II UPS aircraft reporting water vapor within +/- 1 hour window of radiosonde release time for experiment so far using FSL Java viewer: 0230 UTC - none 0645 UTC - 2 (FSL Tail number 376, 286) 0930 UTC - 3 (FSL Tail number 285, 287, 286) UW-CIMSS WVSS-II web site: http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/wvssii/ AERIBago contact number: 608-219-0565 If you or anyone you know would like to be included on this email list please respond to these summaries with your/their contact information.
