-----------------------
AERI-bago Daily Summary
-----------------------

Date: 12 June 2002 CST (Wednesday)
Location: UW-Madison SSEC/CIMSS
Operator: B. Knuteson/K. Baggett

Weather Conditions:

Mostly clear, highs in upper 80's to low 90's, dewpoints in low to mid
60's. Dryline over eastern New Mexico. Weak windshift /cool front
slowly pushing southward toward site. Moderately unstable CAPE values,
rapidly rising around 2000 J/kg around 2030 UTC, but falls off again
soon after. Convection develops toward the southeast with tornado
watches one county over.

Instrument Status:

AERI operating well. Bob K replaced Stirling cooler about 0030 UTC and
also cleaned dusty scene mirror with water around 0130 UTC to get the LW
Responsivity out of the red.
Stirling cooler now operating well. LW Responsivity in the yellow, but
not by much.

Science:
Convective initiation mission was conducted by P-3, Lear, King Airs
and Proteus. All indications were that these flights were successful.
Low level jet mission with the Falcon aircraft was cancelled.
Tethered Atmospheric Sounding System (TAOS) was deployed just down the
road from Homestead, the first time it has been used at IHOP.
TAOS is used to detect winds in the lowest few hundred meters of the
atmosphere. Measurements actually taken along the rope with a mini
yellow blimp to keep it in position.

Clusters of storms seen to the southeast after 2030 UTC, but clear skies
over Homestead for much of the time. Bob K pointed out an interesting
feature in the BAGO data around 1030 UTC where the upper levels cooled
and moistened, but warmed and dried by 1300 UTC. May have been caused
by the meandering stationary front going back and forth over the area.

Miscellaneous:
Bob Knuteson remained at the BAGO until 1900 UTC, handing off duties to
Kevin Baggett.
Kevin forgot his PCMCIA card for his laptop, but is using simoon for
correspondence.
Kevin tasked with making backup CDs of the AERI data on simoon.
Kevin thought he changed all his preferences in Netscape (Identity
right?) on simoon, but still has his name coming up as Robert Knuteson
in sent e-mails. Will the real Bob K please step forward?? :)
