TAMDAR AERI-bago Validation Experiment (TAVE) Daily Summary ----------------------- Date: 05 March 2005 CST (Sunday) 0000-2400 UTC Location: Tennessee Air National Guard at MEM Airport Operators: K. Bedka, S. Bedka, S. Cultice http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/tamdar/ Weather Conditions: Beautiful sunny skies with a few scattered cirrus. Highs in the mid-60's. Northwesterly winds at about 15 kts in the afternoon, gusting to 20 kts. Instrument Status: * Surface pressure, RH, and temperature sensors working and archiving. Anemometer is still malfunctioning. UW-CIMSS crew has decided to examine the anemometer when the AERIbago is taken back to UW-Madison. Therefore, the wind data contained in the surface data files is invalid. * Ceilometer working and archiving. * GPS system working and archiving * AERI working and archiving. * Radiosonde system is working and archiving. 0100 Launch normal, data good. 1430 Launch normal, data good. 1615 Launch normal, data good with the exception of surface RH%... see note below. 2015 Launch normal, data good. 2300 Launch normal, data good. Science/Miscellaneous: Please note that the surface observation of RH% listed in the 1615 UTC radiosonde file should be 33.02%, not 41.3%. This value was mistakenly entered incorrectly into the Vaisala software. The 0100, 1430, and 1615 launches tomorrow have been cancelled. The Bago is running out of radiosondes and we are expecting a new shipment on Monday morning. The expected weather pattern for today and tomorrow is similar to others that we have sampled already. However, on Monday, a cut low ejects east across Texas, as return flow slowly develops late Sunday over the region. Rain, with the return moisture, will overspread west tenn first thing Monday morning and persist through the day. Thunder will be possible monday afternoon, as a warm front approaches from the south. If the warm front edges north of the area, a few breaks may occurr, in turn increasing the chances for a better outbreak for thunderstorms. SPC might have to upgrade the Tenn valley to a slight risk for Monday afternoon. In order to be sure that we have sondes available for the 1430 and 1615 launches on Monday, we have opted to cancel several launches tomorrow. Kris Bedka is leaving today, and Scott Cultice arrived yesterday (hence the great detailed weather information we have in this report!!) The operators have 5 sondes remaining within the AERIbago.
