----------------------- TAMDAR AERI-bago Validation Experiment (TAVE) Daily Summary ----------------------- Date: 24 February 2005 CST (Thursday) Location: Memphis Air National Guard at MEM Airport Operators: W. Feltz, E. Olson, K. Bedka, J. Short http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/tamdar/ Weather Conditions: High in mid-40's, low stratus, drizzle, cleared out around 23 UTC, light winds Instrument Status: * Surface sensors (temperature, relative humidity, pressure and winds) working and archiving * Ceilometer working but daily files are still in limbo (Bruce working on this) * AERI working and archiving * Radiosonde system is working (sort of) - we experience a number of software issues along with three inoperable radiosondes, Erik has worked through most of the problems with Vaisala, problems with software still exist but we have learned (through trial/error) how to avoid them on our new system. Radiosonde Summary: 1430 Radiosonde Launch - no data due to software problem 1615 Radiosonde Launch - no data due to software problem (this was frustrating, Vaisala worked with us) 2015 Radiosonde Launch - Yeah, success good data 2300 Radiosonde Launch - Aborted due to heavy air traffic The tower has been exceptionally cooperative and easy to work with. Many thanks from the TAMDAR balloon launch team!! Near realtime radiosonde ascii files have been limited to the 2015 UTC launch, we expect thing to be smoother tomorrow (sorry Bill M.). * GPS system will be deployed tomorrow * AERIBago is running smoothly Science: We spent a lot of time on resolving radiosonde problems. Most data seems to be uploading successfully to bora0.ssec.wisc.edu. Wayne will be able to get many of the quicklooks running smoothly on Monday. Also, trained Kris on instrument and Bago operations. Kris Bedka has developed quicklook comparisons of time-height x-sections for TAMDAR and RUC. http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/tamdar/quicklooksTAMDAR_MEM.html Resolving radiosonde software problems. Miscellaneous: Kris Bedka arrived today and John Short has left. AERIBago contact number: 608-219-0565 Cheers, Wayne
