Naming Hurricanes

The National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida is responsible for naming hurricanes in the North Atlantic basin. When a weather disturbance intensifies into a tropical storm, the Hurricane Center assigns the storm a name from one of the following six lists. These lists are recycled but individual storm names are retired when a hurricane causes significant damage.

The letters Q, U, X, Y, and Z are not included because of the scarcity of names beginning with those letters.

In the event that more than twenty-one named tropical cyclones occur in the Atlantic basin in a season, or more than twenty-four named tropical cyclones in the eastern North Pacific basin, any additional storms will take names from an alternate list of names approved by the WMO
