Introduction
CIMSS has been actively involved in national and international efforts to exploit the use of radiance measurements from NOAA weather satellites, beginning with the launch of TIROS-N in October, 1978.  CIMSS has worked closely with NOAA/NESDIS Office of Research and Applications, and is a member of  the International TOVS Working Group (ITWG), a component of the International RadiationCommission (IRC).   Key areas of CIMSS research with POES are briefly summarized below.

International TOVS / ATOVS Processing Packages
The International ATOVS Processing Package (IAPP) has been developed to retrieve the atmospheric temperature profile, moisture profile, total ozone and other parameters in both clear and cloudy atmospheres from ATOVS radiance measurements.  The IAPP operates in the Unix environmenton IBM, SGI, Sun and HP workstations.  User documentation included with the software describes installation of the IAPP, the design structure, and how each module operates.

The IAPP is designed to work with the AAPP (AVHRR and ATOVS Preprocessing Package), level 1-D output file.  The AAPP must be acquired independently from EUMETSAT
