The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has currently designated six Centres of Excellence for Satellite Education and Training. They include the Regional Meteorological Training Centres in Barbados, China, Costa Rica, Kenya, and Niger, and the Bureau of Meteorology Training Centre in Australia. These six centres in partnership with NOAA/NESDIS (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration/National Environmental Satellite Data and Information Service), JMA (Japan Meteorological Agency), EUMETSAT (European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites) and CMA (China Meteorological Administration) make up the initial core of the CGMS (Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites) / WMO Virtual Laboratory for Satellite Meteorology. The Virtual Lab is a web portal for Satellite Meteorology Education and Training and when fully established will offer education and training material for Satellite Meteorology specialists and Operational Forecasters as well as access to the Virtual Resource Library.

There are several entries to the Virtual Lab:
