Extratropical Cyclone Simulation
Description: Simulated atmospheric fields were generated using version 2.0.3.1 of the WRF model (ARW core). The simulation was initialized at 00 UTC 05 December 2003 with 1° GFS data and then run for 24 hours on a single 1070 x 1070 grid point domain with 2-km horizontal resolution and 50 vertical sigma levels. The simulation employed the following parameterizations: - WRF single-moment 6-class (WSM6) microphysics
- Yonsei University (YSU) planetary boundary layer
- RRTM/Dudhia radiation
- NOAH land-surface model
- Explicit convection (i.e. no cumulus parameterization)
Dataset 1: Data with 4-km horizontal resolution is available once each hour from 12 UTC 05 December until 00 UTC 06 December. The 4-km data was obtained by coarsening the model-simulated data by a factor of two. This coarsened dataset contains 4x4 GIFTS cubes for each output time for a total of 208 cubes. The total dataset size is 17 Gb. Dataset 2: Data with 2-km horizontal resolution is available every 5 minutes from 16 UTC until 18 UTC during 05 December. This uncoarsened dataset contains 8x8 GIFTS cubes for each output time for a total of 1600 cubes during the two-hour period. The total dataset size is 130 Gb. Since this dataset contains 2-km data, each GIFTS cube is actually only 1/4 the geographical size of prior GIFTS cubes.
