VISITview Teletraining Lesson
(Updated: 15 February 2007)
In order to install this VISITview lesson, you will need to create a new directory
on your Windows computer hard drive, download a self extracting, compressed file (an 'exe' file) into this
new directory, and then execute (run) this file in order to extract the data and program
files.
-
create a directory on your computer to hold this lesson. For example,
open a Command Prompt window and type:
cd \
mkdir visit
cd visit
mkdir water_vapor
cd water_vapor
You can also do this using the Windows Explorer or My
Computer.
-
get the self-extracting file (it is about 107 MB in size) by aiming your Web browser at either of the following locations:
ftp://ftp.ssec.wisc.edu/visit/wv_2007feb15.exe
ftp://rammftp.cira.colostate.edu/braun/visit/wv_2007feb15.exe
-
be sure to put this file into the same directory you
created in step 1.
-
to extract all the image and program files, just run the wv_2007feb15.exe
file by either:
-
opening My Computer or the Windows Explorer and clicking
on the filename wv_2007feb15.exe
OR
-
opening a Command Prompt window, typing cd \visit\water_vapor, and then typing:
wv_2007feb15
This completes the installation. To test the lesson installation, first open the "Display" Control Panel and make sure your Settings for the Display is at least 1024 by 768 pixels or larger; then start the "local version" of the lesson by clicking on the
visitlocal.bat
filename from My Computer or Windows Explorer, or
open a Command Prompt window, and type:
cd \visit\water_vapor
visitlocal
To begin the actual "live" instructor-led teletraining lesson, type visit from within the visit\water_vapor directory. During the lesson, if a message "Communications problem - restart" appears
at the bottom of the window, then you will need to close out that window
(double click over the "X" icon in the upper right corner of the ViewClient window), and then enter the
visitlocal
command again.
In the Command Prompt window where you entered the visitlocal command, you will see
various communications message appearing; for the most part, you should
ignore these.
Note...
The Java Runtime Environment (JRE) software is now included in the wv_2007feb15.exe file -- if you are using a Windows NT/95/98 system, it is no longer necessary to install the JRE beforehand (if you have already installed JRE on your Windows system, this will not present a conflict with the Water Vapor lesson).
If you are using a MacOS X/Linux/Unix system, you may need to install the JRE software on your local computer...see the JRE instructions page. To begin the VISITview lesson, use the command
sh visitlocal.sh
or
sh visit.sh
