    (1) Introduction

This basic-level VISIT teletraining lesson will review remote sensing aspects of the "water vapor" channel, highlight changes made to the water vapor channel on the GOES-12 and GOES-13 imager, and discuss basic applications of water vapor channel imagery to weather analysis and forecasting. (lesson created October 2003; updated February 2007)

    (3) Training session options:

      (A) Interactive VISITview teletraining session. (To be used with a VISIT instructor leading the session). Click here to signup for teletraining. The session will last about 75 minutes. This teletraining session uses the Java-based VISITview software, where a Windows PC (with 128 MB RAM or greater) with an Internet connection is needed.

      (B) Web-based training lesson - a "stand-alone" version viewed via a Web browser ("Instructor Notes" will be included on each HTML page). This lesson version may be viewed at any time. These slides are ideal for printing from a Web browser.

      (C) Web-browser VISITview lesson - another "stand-alone" version, which uses the VISITview software within a Web browser. This version retains all the functionality of VISITview which you see in a "live" teletraining session (drawing, text annotation, etc), and can be viewed at any time. The Instructor Notes are not included in this lesson version, but can be viewed in a separate Web browser (or printed out beforehand).

      (D) Local VISITview lesson - This is the same version of the lesson used in a "live" VISITview teletraining session, but no connection is made to an external VISITview server. You download the lesson file and go through the lesson on your own in "local mode" using the visitlocal.bat file. Instructor Notes are not included in this lesson version, but can be viewed in a separate Web browser ( or printed out beforehand).

E.) Audio playback - This VISITview lesson file contains recorded audio and instructor annotations, and can be viewed at any time (NOTE: this is for a previous version of the lesson, so the content is somewhat dated compared to the current 15feb2007 version). Certificates of completion for NOAA employees can be obtained through your Science Operation Officer or training point of contact. For detailed information on how to view the recorded VISITview lesson click here.

You may either request a DVD (with all VISIT lesson audio playback files) -OR- download this individual VISIT lesson audio playback file (it is about 166 MB in size) from the following site:

      ftp://ftp.ssec.wisc.edu/visit/wv_audio_18oct2004.exe

      ftp://rammftp.cira.colostate.edu/bikos/audio/wv_audio_18oct2004.exe

After extracting the files into that directory, use the "visitauto.bat" file to start the lesson (Windows users), or use the command "sh visitauto.sh" (MacOS X or Unix users).
