A cut-off low was located over the Four Corners region of the southern Rocky Mountains on 29 March 1996. A dual jet streak structure was evident in the water vapor imagery, rounding the base of the cut-off low and moving across New Mexico and Texas. A large area of mountain-induced standing wave turbulence was generated as these wind maxima moved to the lee of the mountains. Due to the very dry air mass, most of these waves were not apparent as wave clouds in the visible imagery. Such a flow regime would be a concern for aviation safety, since clear air turbulence (CAT) would likely be encountered.
