Volcano Hazards Alert 1 NOAA/NESDIS Satellite Analysis Branch July 1, 1997 0215 UTC Popocatepetl (1401-09) 19.023N 98.622 Area: Mexico Summit Height: 5465 Meters (17,929 Feet) Time of initial eruption: 30 June around 2345 UTC SIGMET 6A from Mexico City valid from 30/2355Z to 01/0555Z warns of volcanic ash to FL400 from Popocatepetl. The sigmet warns that the ash is moving westward. No volcanic activity is discernible in GOES8 satellite imagery thru 0215UTC. We will continue to monitor the area and send additional messages if activity is indicated in imagery.
