NOAA/NESDIS Program Management Review
FIRSTT Activities
Satellite-derived rainfall rate estimation product
CIMSS is working with a version of the NOAA/NESDIS Automated Satellite-Derived Rainfall Rate Estimation algorithm developed by Gilberto Vicente. This "auto-estimator" is being run operationally by the NESDIS/ORA Hydrology Team using 30-minute GOES imagery, and currently performs best for deep convective precipitation estimates.
Planned CIMSS modifications:
- incorporate hourly GOES sounder PW into moisture correction factor
- tune algorithm for 15 minute and rapid-scan GOES image input
- apply algorithm to FIRSTT case study (31 May 1996), obtaining high-density rain gauge reports to assist verification
- collaborate with NOAA/NESDIS/ORA Hydrology Team on other algorithm enhancements
Other FIRSTT activities include applying multispectral GOES imagery products to the 31 May 1996 case study to estimate storm top heights, locate overshooting tops, and indentify storm propagation and severe weather signatures.
