22 August 1999 | Hurricane Bret | GOES-8 Imager 10.7 Micrometer IR

This loop of GOES-8 10.7 micrometer InfraRed (IR) imagery shows Hurricane Bret as it approached the coast of southern Texas on 22 August 1999. Most of these images are at 1 minute intervals (Super Rapid Scan Operations, SRSO). Coldest cloud top temperatures were around -70 to -71 C (black to gray enhancement). At this time, the maximum sustained winds were 120 knots, with gusts to 140, the central pressure was 946 hectopascals (27.94 inches), and the diameter of the eye was 15 nautical miles.
