15 September 1998 -- Mesoscale Vortex Over the Atlantic Ocean

This 2-image Java applet will take a minute or two to load...

Hold any mouse button down as you move the cursor across the large GOES-8 visible image; the smaller inset window shows the corresponding GOES-8 10.7 micron longwave IR image. In the visible image, the low-level mesoscale vortex is evident as a well-defined swirl of clouds; in the 10.7 micron IR image the vortex is apparent, although cloud top temperatures are relatively warm (+10 to +20 C, yellow to blue enhancement). These warm cloud top temperatures indicate that the vortex clouds are in the lower troposphere.
