Catalina Eddy Off the Southern California Coast

(this 14-image Java animation sequence will take a minute or two to load...)

(- Animation -)

This loop of GOES-9 3.9um shortwave IR imagery covers the period of intensification of a Catalina Eddy circulation just off the southern California coast on 16 June 1998. This eddy acted to induce a persistent onshore flow of marine air into the coastal counties during the entire day. Hourly surface wind reports (red) are plotted on each image, and the ETA 1000 hPa wind streamlines (0 and 6-hour forecast) are plotted on the 06:00 and 12:00 UTC images (yellow). The ETA model did not have a good handle on the intensification of this mesoscale eddy feature.
