22-23 February 1998 -- Central Florida Tornado Outbreak
GOES-8 6.7 Micron IR (Water Vapor)

(this 20-image Java animation sequence will take a minute or two to load...)

This loop of hourly GOES-8 water vapor imagery shows the eastward progression of the intense squall line across the Gulf of Mexico and northern/central Florida. At 6-hour intervals the ETA model 250 hPa wind streamlines (yellow) and wind speed (cyan) contours are overlaid on the images.

Note that northern and central Florida are beneath the favorable left exit region of the Gulf of Mexico jet streak, where upward vertical motions can enhance storm top ventilation. Also evident is pronounced drying in the wake of the convection as it moves across Florida.
