This loop of GOES-11 visible channel imagery shows the eastward movement of the elevated smoke plume across northern South Dakota on 07 August 2000. The smoke appears to have reduced solar heating enough at Aberdeen SD (identifier KABR) to allow the surface temperature to fall slightly (when other surrounding station temperatures were steady or slowly rising during the mid-afternoon hours).
GOES-11 is nearing the end of the July-August 2000 Science Test. The satellite is in constant Rapid Scan Operations (RSO) mode, allowing imagery at 5-minute intervals (compared to the standard 15 minute interval imagery normally received from GOES satellites).
