03 April 1996 -- Outflow-Initiated Storms Over Kansas

(this 13-image Java animation sequence will take a minute or two to load...)

Hourly GOES-8 Lifted Index

Early morning convection left behind a rain-cooled outflow boundary across southwestern Oklahoma into the extreme eastern Texas panhandle. This outflow region shows up as a pool of stable air (Lifted Index values greater than zero, blue enhancement). After 21:46 UTC thunderstorms began to form over southwestern Oklahoma, as the southern portion of the outflow boundary acted as a focus mechanism for convective initiation.
