GOES-8 Wildfire Detection in Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas

On 22 February 1996 numerous fires were detected in the GOES-8 3.9 micron imagery in Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas. Notice the variation in fire locations and intensity from 2:45 P.M. to 5:45 P.M. CST. The fire along the Oklahoma and Kansas border shows a dramatic increase in size and intensity during this 3-hour time period.

The biomass burning products displayed on this web site were developed and produced with funding from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA: NAGW-3804, NAG5-4751) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA: NA67EC0100).
