GOES-8 Multispectral Fire Detection in Canada

On 21 June 1995 numerous fires in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario were detected in the GOES-8 3.9 micron band. This 4-panel composite shows the fires as observed in the visible, 3.9 (or 4) micron, 10.7 (or 11) micron, and 3.9-10.7 (or 4-11) difference product at 2345 UTC. It is interesting to note that many of these fires were detected north of 50 degrees latitude and under widespread cloud cover.

The biomass burning products displayed on this web site were developed and produced with funding from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA: NAGW-3804, NAG5-4751) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA: NA67EC0100).
