Applications of the GOES VAS ABBA (1983-1991)
Trends in South American Biomass Burning Detected with the GOES ABBA from 1983 to 1991
Data obtained from the GOES VAS archive located at the University of Wisconsin-Madison
Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) were used to monitor fires
at the peak of the fire season in South America in 1983, 1988, 1989, and
1991. Although the GOES VISSR Atmospheric Sounder (VAS) had limited
spatial resolution, applications of the GOES VAS ABBA demonstrated the
capability of using GOES to monitor fires in the tropics (Prins and Menzel,
1992; 1994).
The biomass burning products displayed
on this web site were developed and produced with funding from the National
Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA: NAGW-3804, NAG5-4751) and the
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA: NA67EC0100).
